Fall Re-norming: Modeling Power Sharing

Updated: Oct 11, 2023

Aaron Barlin and Maris Harmon hold their Fall 2023 re-norming and power sharing meeting to reflect on communication styles and decision-making protocol

🍂 As we approach the beginning of our fall break and the end of another exciting chapter of collaboration, Aaron and Maris wanted to share a reflection activity to mark these milestones: dialogic norm revision. 🌱

Even in "just" a duo, we must be cognizant of mutually reciprocal expectations, power sharing, and culturally responsive communication. 🤝

When our next chapter of collabs begins, how will we reapproach...

🌸 our compassionate culture of "calling in" rather than "calling out"?

⏭️ strategic planning of next steps and considerations?

🎨 synthesis and exploration of ideas and simultaneous truths?

➗ divisions of time and emotional labor intrinsic to DEI and coaching?

🌃 resting from work so that we model fuller, more holistic living?

These reflections comprise a vital step towards maintaining partnership—and something we model for folks hoping to achieve similarly open cultures! 💛

Land Acknowledgement | We at Emergent Change operate physically from Sacramento, California and Burlington, Vermont. We acknowledge that our Sacramento office is situated on the traditional homelands of the Nisenan, Maidu, and Miwok Peoples. Our Burlington office resides on the traditional and unceded territory of the Abenaki People. We extend our respect and gratitude to the many Indigenous people and their ancestors whose rich histories and vibrant communities include these lands, and we recognize the systemic inequities that have been perpetrated upon them. Justice-oriented action begins with awareness of privilege, positionality, and inequity. As a commitment to fostering more inclusive, equitable spaces, we are dedicated to continually advocating for and teaching on antiracism and social justice.
